Composite veneers (also known as bonding) is a procedure in which resin material is used to cover aesthetic zone areas to give a more natural look and a great smile. It can be applied to all front teeth that have stains, chips, or old white fillings, and can be done in a single visit. Some tooth structure removal may be required for best results. Although composite veneers are not as long lasting as other cosmetic procedures such as porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns, they are a less expensive option and can have great results.
Porcelain veneers are used to cover the front surfaces of teeth that have stains, discolourations, chips or cracks, or teeth that have gaps.
Unlike crowns, which cover the whole tooth, veneers need less tooth preparation (less enamel is removed). An impression of this removed tooth structure is taken and sent to the lab for fabrication. Once manufactured, the veneer is cemented in place. Veneers can last for 10-20 years, however they need to be kept very clean as they fail if correct oral hygiene is not followed.
Crowns are made of either porcelain or metal (or a combination of both) and are placed on teeth that have large fillings, have had previous root canal treatments, or teeth that need to be aesthetically improved. Crowns are a long-term solution to keep your natural teeth, lasting approximately 10-20 years if regular maintenance and hygiene is kept.
Bridges are a 3-unit crown (also porcelain or metal, or a combination of both), and are usually indicated for either one or two adjacent missing teeth. They are also a long-term solution, lasting about 10-20 years with regular maintenance and care.
Implants are an alternate treatment to dentures and bridges, and offer a more stable and the most ideal treatment to missing teeth. Implants are a “screw” that is placed in the bone to mimic a tooth root, and a crown is placed over this to mimic a natural tooth crown. In addition, implants can be used to stabilise new or existing full dentures.
