How to Maintain and Repair Dentures

Correctly fitted and properly maintained dentures can look just as natural as your own teeth. More importantly, a good set of dentures should fit snugly and cause no pain or discomfort.

Unfortunately, many people have dentures that are uncomfortable because they no longer fit properly. This occurs due to either a lack of maintenance or cheap, poor quality dentures to begin with.

Why Denture Wearers Need to Visit a Dental Professional

Like everybody else, people with dentures need to visit the dentist on a regular basis. Regular dental care is even more important for those with dentures, because artificial teeth actually require more maintenance than natural teeth.

Dentures Maintenance Tips

Some of this maintenance can be done at home. Here are some quick maintenance tips:

  • Clean your dentures every day using a soft toothbrush with soap and water.
  • Never to use toothpaste to clean your dentures!
  • Soak your dentures overnight to reduce odour-causing bacterium.
  • When you remove your dentures, massage your gums to stimulate blood circulation.
  • Never attempt to self-repair your dentures with super-glue!

But there are many specialised repairs that can only be done in the dental office. Denture adjustments and relines can only be done by a dental professional, and in some cases, the clasps that attach partial dentures to teeth can break or wear out so they have to be replaced.

More importantly, artificial teeth have to be replaced because of wear and tear or discomfort. Many full and partial dentures are made of acrylic, which is softer and bulkier than the material used in chrome partial dentures. Chrome dentures however, are more expensive, but are thinner and are more comfortable.

When to Replace Your Dentures

Replacing old and worn out dentures with one of our custom-made sets of dentures can give you a natural looking set of teeth that are much more comfortable. Our dentures are tailored to each individual, and made right here in Australia, so you will get a quality set of teeth that fit your mouth snugly.

If your dentures are not fitting properly or are a few years old, you should come in for a visit. We will be able to help you by putting in new teeth that actually fit and feel good.

Many people do not realise it, but you should not need to use a denture adhesive with your dentures. A well-made set of dentures should fit snugly with the natural suction in your mouth.

Repairing vs. Relining Dentures

A denture repair can be done if your denture has broken and needs to be put back together. Repairs can be done in most cases where the denture has been snapped cleanly. If the broken pieces of your denture cannot be pieced together, you may need to have a new denture made.

A denture reline is the process in which material is added to the base of your denture to better fit the shape of your gums, allowing for more retention and suction. Depending on the individual, denture relines may need to be done every 2-3 years due to the constant change of your bone and gums.

There are three types of relining:

  1. Standard – uses the same hard material as the denture.
  2. Soft Reline – softer material used for sore spots inside the denture.
  3. Temporary – used during the healing process when extractions have been done recently.

Regular visits to a dental professional and careful maintenance are the keys to having natural looking teeth that feel good in your mouth.
